PIME Missionaries in the Philippines remember Father Fausto Tentorio
The confrère was humble, prudent but courageous in his apostolate among the poor and the marginalized. Appeal of Msgr. Quevedo, Archbishop of Cotabato, that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The missionary’s funeral will be held October 25 in the Cathedral of Kidapawan.

Zamboanga (AsiaNews) - Investigation continue into the murder of Fr. Fausto Tentorio, the missionary of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), murdered on 17 October by an unknown assailant in Arakan (North Cotabato, Mindanao). His funeral will be held Oct. 25 at the Cathedral of Kidapawan, presided by Msgr. Romulo Tolentino Cruz. His brother Felice, with his wife and two children, two friends and Fr. Gian Battista Zanchi, the Superior General of PIME will attend the solemn rite. On 28 October in the Cathedral of Zamboanga, a mass in memory of Fr. Tentorio will be held. It will be celebrated by Msgr. Romulo Valles Archbishop of Zamboanga and former bishop of Kidapawan.

Below, we publish the official press release issued today by the community of PIME missionaries in the Philippines:
“You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6: 8)

This is the Biblical passage we read in the Last Will and Testament of Father Fausto Tentorio, our Confrere in PIME and mission. These words in a nutshell contain all the life and mission of our brother priest. In truth, he walked humbly with his God, doing justice and loving goodness on behalf of the poorest among the poor and marginalized as Filipino Indigenous People and farmers have been and still are in Arakan Valley, North Cotabato.

For over thirty years Father Fausto was a father to them (they affectionately called him Tatay Pops!), a brother, a mentor and a friend, selflessly identifying himself with them in their life and culture. He was truly one of and with them!

The PIME community in the Philippines praises and thanks God for His gift of martyrdom. God has called him to make the ultimate sacrifice in God’s service and in the service of God’s people.

We know that Father Tentorio was a gentle man, evangelically simple and prudent, but fiercely courageous and consistent in his apostolate and in his advocacy for the marginalized people, especially the Indigenous People, and for the integrity of creation.

We, the PIME Missionaries in the Philippines, with hearts heavy with sadness and pain, condemn in the strongest way possible the killing of Father Fausto and cry out for justice for him.

Father Fausto’ s merciless murder has renewed in all of us the pain and the loss of our two brother martyrs: Father Tullio Favali, killed in Tulunan in April 1985, and Father Salvatore Carzedda, killed in Zamboanga City in May 1992.

At this point in history, we, the PIME community in the Philippines, renew our commitment to witness the Gospel in spite of risks of all kinds. We have made a promise to serve the Church and the people in the Philippines as we have done since 1968, counting on the presence of the Lord Jesus: “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28: 20), and so we will not leave at this moment, but remain and continue to serve. Evil will not triumph with the death of Father Fausto!
Lastly, we make our own the words of Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, former Bishop of Kidapawan.

“Father Fausto’ s death is pure murder. I totally condemn it as a crime that cries out to heaven. If the perpetrators think that his murder would silence priests, religious sisters and brothers, and bishops from proclaiming the justice of God’s kingdom, they are wrong. The blood of martyrs like Fr. Fausto fans the daring and courage of those who care about peace and justice enough to sacrifice themselves while travelling the road of active non-violence. How to spot a Sociopath....[like Fr. Maciel]

10 signs for spotting a sociopath

#1) Sociopaths are charming. 
Sociopaths have high charisma and tend to attract a following just because people want to be around them. They have a "glow" about them that attracts people who typically seek guidance or direction. They often appear to be sexy or have a strong sexual attraction. Not all sexy people are sociopaths, obviously, but watch out for over-the-top sexual appetites and weird fetishes.

#2) Sociopaths are more spontaneous and intense than other people.

They wildly exaggerate things to the point of absurdity, but when they describe it to you in a storytelling format, for some reason it sounds believable at the time.

#5) Sociopaths seek to dominate others and "win" at all costs. They hate to lose any argument or fight and will viciously defend their web of lies, even to the point of logical absurdity.

#6) Sociopaths tend to be highly intelligent, 
but they use their brainpower to deceive others rather than empower them. Their high IQs often makes them dangerous. This is why many of the best-known serial killers who successfully evaded law enforcement were sociopaths.

#7) Sociopaths are incapable of love 
and are entirely self-serving. They may feign love or compassion in order to get what they want, but they don't actually FEEL love in the way that you or I do.

#8) Sociopaths speak poetically. 
They are master wordsmiths, able to deliver a running "stream of consciousness" monologue that is both intriguing and hypnotic. They are expert storytellers and even poets. As a great example of this in action, watch this interview of Charles Manson on YouTube.

#9) Sociopaths never apologize. 
They are never wrong. They never feel guilt. They can never apologize. Even if shown proof that they were wrong, they will refuse to apologize and instead go on the attack.

#10) Sociopaths are delusional and literally believe that what they say becomes truth

Is the Legion of Christ priestly formation seriously flawed in regards to the whole area of sexuality?*

Blogger had reported previous accusation against Fr. O'Reilly which Fr. had strenuously denied  And, in a sense, we had given him 'the benefit of the doubt. Today read a report that the Santiago, Chile, prosecutor, is charging Fr. O'Reilly with another sexual abuse (assault). The news is in Spanish.


Putting together these accusations and the confession of Fr. Williams for his sexual liaison with a young woman [under his pastoral care? this would be very serious! This may be why the Legion won't reveal any further information and wants the case -and Father Williams- to go away]... putting these and other cases together could lead to t he following question.

Let me add that this "second accusation" news if from Dec 2012, and in this sense is not really new or recent.  It seems that it refers to abuse of a sister of the original victim.

What is pretty clear from the news is that the Legion has distanced itself and its school from Fr. O'Reilly -and vice versa! One reading of the news implies that the Legion and the Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, ordered an investigation. "Hey, brother, you're on your own!" See Spanish language article which tells how father was suspended from his functions at the Cumbres School (by the Legion!)

Forced Limbo

I recently received an email from a Legionary Priest I had been close to before leaving the Legion, and for a time, after. I hadn't had any contact with him for many months. He sent me an Easter greeting, and I replied. From there I was able to find out a bit what is going on in his life. I was disturbed by this interchange of emails. I will keep his name and personal data private, out of respect.

It seems he is no longer living in a Legionary community, but has not sought a diocese. He is living in his home town in a private residence with a family member. This is source of great suffering for him. He is in a real state of limbo, neither here nor there. Imagine what that means for his priestly ministry.

My heart went out to him when I heard this. I know that in the past he was called to Rome, normally a period in time they give to dissident religious or priests to get them back on track though spiritual direction and studies. I doubt he was very happy in that setting.

I don't know how his present situation came about, but for him to have to seek refuge, either willingly or by force, is not a sign that all is well behind the curtain of Legionary charity. All I know is that, when you are in limbo, as I had lived more that a couple of time in the Legion, what do you say to others, how do you explain to them what you are going through. You live in constant humiliation. From there comes a life of lies to protect the honor of the Congregation, who couldn't possibly be doing anything wrong. You lie, swallow your pride and keep on plugging along, hoping things will get better.

Obviously things are not getting better. This similar situation with this priest has lead him to live outside his religious community but not accepted into a diocese. That is tragic. So much for "We'll help you with whatever you need."

All this calls to mind the Legionary practices outlined in the Communiqué of the Holy See dated May 1, 2013 [2010? says this blogger; need to clarify]:

a deplorable discrediting and distancing of those who entertained doubts as to the probity of his [Fr Maciel's] conduct;

the need to review the exercise of authority, which must be joined to truth, so as to respect consciences and to develop in the light of the Gospel as authentic ecclesial service.

Obviously, this issue of Legionary procedure has not been addressed. 

I have given up hope that a true renewal will take place in the Legion long ago. This exchange with this priest has only helped to cement this conviction. We can only pray that our Lord will intercede and rectify this situation. The Legion must not be allowed to continue using people and abusing individual's generosity.
