[Blogger inquiries seem to lead to Fr. Peter, whose star once shone brightly on the US Legion horizon being assigned to a modest school in Mexico City. Readers, please research. Could this correspond to the usual Legion tactic of sending overseas members who could be sued in the USA?...as in the case of Fr. Anthony Bannon, etc.]

And its all because of this "life.after.rc" blog, which may be approved by the Regnum Christi!

It all happened in 2010 when that blogger took Fr. Peter to task for comments made regarding Gateway Academy, a pristine Legion of Christi [or Regnum Christi, not sure which, does it matter?] institution.


I think this article, Peter Hopkin's comments, needs a serious redress.
Peter Hopkins LC is the same Peter Hopkins who was behind taking Paul Lennon and Regain to court a la scientology.
He makes no real address to the allegations about manipulation of conscience or going against parental authority. He picks out the Vatican's hope that the legion continues its good works over the serious flaws it points out. (Is it a stretch to say the Vatican hopes this? is this hope in the place of faith? as in I hope it rains because we're in a drought?).
Bishop Watty and the Vatican have clearly expressed that the Maciel effect has infected the entire Legion.
To acknowledge the mistakes/crimes/failings/sins of a dead man is one thing, to be able to recognise how that dead man has influenced your thoughts and behaviour is another. Maciel did NOT simply live a parallel life, his life AS a legionary was twisted and manipulative and this gave him power and wealth.
He was a sociopath and created systems to cope and live. Unfortunately his idea of living was exploitation and the systems he used to exploit have been in place in the Legion since the start. These are the serious problems that need addressed.
Fr. Hopkins has the luxury of making these comments about Gateway because the details, the dates and occurrences were contained in www.exlegionaries.com and comparable with the other US schools. This is the website that Peter Hopkins shut down.

Now when I Googled Fr. Peter I got some nasty stuff saying that he can be nasty too. So Aaron is not alone. I hope Fr. has not made enemies for himself:

"Anyway getting back to the tale at hand, one such tradition was the good old fashioned one of physical mortification, via tying various(metal) straps around ones limbs to impede circulation and cause discomfort or whipping oneself. Yes, whipping oneself! I still remember one evening in the winter of 1982 when Br. Peter Hopkins, now Fr. Peter Hopkins and a big wig in the States with the Legion, gave us the Legionary spirituality class and introduced the not(at)ion of whipping oneself as a penance. Now, I had hear(d) about hair shirts a la Matt Talbot and could stomach the cilicio (I think they were called) but whipping oneself sounded so twisted to me that I stood up and protested aloud that this was against the very law of God, that we were each temples of the Holy Spirit and that this was an insult to the Holy Spirit! Naturally this lead to a counter blast from Peter Hopkins who had to restore order to the community and negate my questioning of a long standing legionary tradition. He tore strips off me that evening in public for questioning him and his authority on this....and being the tender novice I meekly conceded and swallowed my pride on the matter.

Areas for renewal consistent with earlier analysis

QUOTES: Results from the Regnum Christi general membership survey conducted early this summer are consistent with the survey taken in 2011.    More than 700 Legionaries, consecrated and lay members completed this year’s form, about half the number from two years ago. As in the earlier survey, members continue to raise a desire for greater transparency in how we operate and a clearer view of the Movement’s overall mission. Both issues are being addressed in our renewal process. Two years ago, many respondents expressed a desire that Regnum Christi put greater emphasis on working within the local Church, particularly in parishes.  The 2013 survey indicates that we have made much progress in this area. At the same time, respondents identified weakness in our willingness to invite new people to the Movement, indicating there are some members still awaiting the results of the various assemblies later this fall and the Legion’s General Chapter to be held early in 2014.  The majority of those surveyed are positive about inviting new members to the Movement.

SANTIAGO.- La Octava Sala de la Corte de Apelaciones de Santiago resolvió dejar con arresto domiciliario total al sacerdote John O'Reilly formalizado por supuestos abusos sexuales a dos menores al interior del colegio Cumbres de Las Condes.    El religioso se encontraba en libertad y sin medidas cautelares, lo que fue revocado por el tribunal de alzada que estimó que con los antecedentes recabados hasta esta instancia procesal "es posible dar por acreditado la existencia de los hechos y la presunta participación del imputado en los mismos".   Asimismo, estableció que la prisión preventiva solicitada por el Ministerio Público era una medida excesiva. Sin embargo, acogió la petición respecto a que el religioso no podrá acercarse a las supuestas víctimas ni sus familiares, así como tampoco a establecimientos educacionales donde acudan menores de edad.   Al término de los alegatos, el defensor Luis Hermosilla aseguró que su representado estaba tranquilo a la espera de la resolución de la corte y enfatizó su intención de llegar luego al juicio oral para demostrar su "total inocencia".  "No nos queda otra cosa que acatar la decisión de la Corte", dijo, recalcando que las presunciones fundadas respecto a la existencia del delito que estableció el tribunal, sólo responden al estándar exigido en esta etapa procesal ya que "basta con poca prueba para poder hacer esa afirmación y no es la evidencia que se necesita en un juicio oral".  Asimismo aclaró que "no es que se esté diciendo que el hecho punible se encuentre acreditado en términos que sea condenado o que haya antecedentes que acrediten su participación como autor de esos hechos. Es un juicio probabilístico y superficial para estas alturas de la investigación".  El querellante José Ignacio Escobar, por su parte, se mostró satisfecho con el fallo, destacando que dicha resolución revoca principalmente la decisión de la jueza del Cuarto Juzgado de Garantía de Santiago, Andrea Díaz-Muñoz, "en el sentido que ratifica que sí existen indicios suficientes respecto de la existencia de los hechos y la participación culpable de este imputado".  "Además impone la medida cautelar que es muy intensa lo que garantiza que este juicio se va a llevar a cabo y allí lograremos acreditar las imputaciones que se han vertido el día de hoy".

En la instancia, Escobar también se refirió a la situación de las víctimas y su familia, detallando que "han pasado por una situación que ha sido tremendamente dolorosa, ellos siguen con sus menores en tratamiento, pero ellos tienen mucha confianza en la acción de la justicia y esta resolución ratifica la creencia que han tenido ellos en el sistema y van a seguir haciéndolo hasta llegar al juicio definitivo".    La semana pasada, la jueza del Cuarto Juzgado de Garantía de Santiago desestimó la existencia del delito y la participación del imputado, ante lo cual la Fiscalía Oriente recurrió a la Corte de Apelaciones por considerar que la medida cautelar de prisión preventiva era la única pertinente por la gravedad del delito.

PIME Missionaries in the Philippines remember Father Fausto Tentorio
The confrère was humble, prudent but courageous in his apostolate among the poor and the marginalized. Appeal of Msgr. Quevedo, Archbishop of Cotabato, that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The missionary’s funeral will be held October 25 in the Cathedral of Kidapawan.

Zamboanga (AsiaNews) - Investigation continue into the murder of Fr. Fausto Tentorio, the missionary of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), murdered on 17 October by an unknown assailant in Arakan (North Cotabato, Mindanao). His funeral will be held Oct. 25 at the Cathedral of Kidapawan, presided by Msgr. Romulo Tolentino Cruz. His brother Felice, with his wife and two children, two friends and Fr. Gian Battista Zanchi, the Superior General of PIME will attend the solemn rite. On 28 October in the Cathedral of Zamboanga, a mass in memory of Fr. Tentorio will be held. It will be celebrated by Msgr. Romulo Valles Archbishop of Zamboanga and former bishop of Kidapawan.

Below, we publish the official press release issued today by the community of PIME missionaries in the Philippines:
“You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6: 8)

This is the Biblical passage we read in the Last Will and Testament of Father Fausto Tentorio, our Confrere in PIME and mission. These words in a nutshell contain all the life and mission of our brother priest. In truth, he walked humbly with his God, doing justice and loving goodness on behalf of the poorest among the poor and marginalized as Filipino Indigenous People and farmers have been and still are in Arakan Valley, North Cotabato.

For over thirty years Father Fausto was a father to them (they affectionately called him Tatay Pops!), a brother, a mentor and a friend, selflessly identifying himself with them in their life and culture. He was truly one of and with them!

The PIME community in the Philippines praises and thanks God for His gift of martyrdom. God has called him to make the ultimate sacrifice in God’s service and in the service of God’s people.

We know that Father Tentorio was a gentle man, evangelically simple and prudent, but fiercely courageous and consistent in his apostolate and in his advocacy for the marginalized people, especially the Indigenous People, and for the integrity of creation.

We, the PIME Missionaries in the Philippines, with hearts heavy with sadness and pain, condemn in the strongest way possible the killing of Father Fausto and cry out for justice for him.

Father Fausto’ s merciless murder has renewed in all of us the pain and the loss of our two brother martyrs: Father Tullio Favali, killed in Tulunan in April 1985, and Father Salvatore Carzedda, killed in Zamboanga City in May 1992.

At this point in history, we, the PIME community in the Philippines, renew our commitment to witness the Gospel in spite of risks of all kinds. We have made a promise to serve the Church and the people in the Philippines as we have done since 1968, counting on the presence of the Lord Jesus: “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28: 20), and so we will not leave at this moment, but remain and continue to serve. Evil will not triumph with the death of Father Fausto!
Lastly, we make our own the words of Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, former Bishop of Kidapawan.

“Father Fausto’ s death is pure murder. I totally condemn it as a crime that cries out to heaven. If the perpetrators think that his murder would silence priests, religious sisters and brothers, and bishops from proclaiming the justice of God’s kingdom, they are wrong. The blood of martyrs like Fr. Fausto fans the daring and courage of those who care about peace and justice enough to sacrifice themselves while travelling the road of active non-violence. How to spot a Sociopath....[like Fr. Maciel]

Picked up this article which could be helpful if you are being recruited or asked to fund raise by Scientology,  the Legion of Christ or Regnum Christi

10 signs for spotting a sociopath

#1) Sociopaths are charming. 
Sociopaths have high charisma and tend to attract a following just because people want to be around them. They have a "glow" about them that attracts people who typically seek guidance or direction. They often appear to be sexy or have a strong sexual attraction. Not all sexy people are sociopaths, obviously, but watch out for over-the-top sexual appetites and weird fetishes.

#2) Sociopaths are more spontaneous and intense than other people. 
They tend to do bizarre, sometimes erratic things that most regular people wouldn't do. They are unbound by normal social contracts. Their behavior often seems irrational or extremely risky.

#3) Sociopaths are incapable of feeling shame, guilt or remorse.

#5) Sociopaths seek to dominate others and "win" at all costs. They hate to lose any argument or fight and will viciously defend their web of lies, even to the point of logical absurdity.

#6) Sociopaths tend to be highly intelligent, 
but they use their brainpower to deceive others rather than empower them. Their high IQs often makes them dangerous. This is why many of the best-known serial killers who successfully evaded law enforcement were sociopaths.

#7) Sociopaths are incapable of love 
and are entirely self-serving. They may feign love or compassion in order to get what they want, but they don't actually FEEL love in the way that you or I do.

#8) Sociopaths speak poetically. 
They are master wordsmiths, able to deliver a running "stream of consciousness" monologue that is both intriguing and hypnotic. They are expert storytellers and even poets. As a great example of this in action, watch this interview of Charles Manson on YouTube.

#9) Sociopaths never apologize. 
They are never wrong. They never feel guilt. They can never apologize. Even if shown proof that they were wrong, they will refuse to apologize and instead go on the attack.

#10) Sociopaths are delusional and literally believe that what they say becomes truth 
merely because they say it! Charles Manson, the sociopathic murderer, is famous for saying, "I've never killed anyone! I don't need to kill anyone! I THINK it! I have it HERE! (Pointing to his temple.) I don't need to live in this physical realm..."

Is the Legion of Christ priestly formation seriously flawed in regards to the whole area of sexuality?*

Blogger had reported previous accusation against Fr. O'Reilly which Fr. had strenuously denied  And, in a sense, we had given him 'the benefit of the doubt. Today read a report that the Santiago, Chile, prosecutor, is charging Fr. O'Reilly with another sexual abuse (assault). The news is in Spanish.


Putting together these accusations and the confession of Fr. Williams for his sexual liaison with a young woman [under his pastoral care? this would be very serious! This may be why the Legion won't reveal any further information and wants the case -and Father Williams- to go away]... putting these and other cases together could lead to t he following question.

Let me add that this "second accusation" news if from Dec 2012, and in this sense is not really new or recent.  It seems that it refers to abuse of a sister of the original victim.

What is pretty clear from the news is that the Legion has distanced itself and its school from Fr. O'Reilly -and vice versa! One reading of the news implies that the Legion and the Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, ordered an investigation. "Hey, brother, you're on your own!" See Spanish language article which tells how father was suspended from his functions at the Cumbres School (by the Legion!)
